The Journey
The journey begins on June 14, 2008 at 11 o'clock. Skip will leave from Lincoln Park Boat Club, Chicago IL and paddle all the way to New York City, arriving at Manhattan Kayak Company, Pier 66 by August 9, 2008.
In order to achieve this goal, he will have to paddle about 40 miles a day. With time built in for inclement weather, the entire paddling journey is expected to last 54 days.
Day one of the journey will begin early. Skip will shove off in the morning, and head up the west coast of Lake Michigan. His trip will continue along the Wisconsin coast to the Northern Islands. Crossing to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Skip will make his way through the Mackinac Straits and then down Michigan’s east coast to Lake Huron. From there, he’ll paddle down the St. Claire River (which borders the U.S. and Canada) , through Lake St. Clair, then down the Detroit River to Lake Erie. Traveling east on Lake Erie, he will continue to Buffalo New York. Tonawanda New York will mark the beginning of Skip’s journey through the Barge/Erie Canal to the Hudson River. And then he will continue down the Hudson to the Big Apple.
